WCAG checker: test your website against WCAG 2.2

Flowproof automatically tests the page you scan against more than 60 rules for WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 level A and AA, using axe-core by Deque. For each rule you see which success criterion it relates to, how serious it is and which elements are affected. The accessibility check is included in Pro and Business.

What the check covers

What a finding looks like

An example from the report. The website is made up; the text is exactly what the scanner reports.

Accessibility (WCAG, EAA, ADA)

  • ✕

    Images must have alternative text

3 elements fail. WCAG 1.1.1 (level A), impact: critical. For example: .hero > img, .team img, footer img

Explanation and fix per element: https://dequeuniversity.com/rules/axe/4.14/image-alt
  • !

    Skip link to main content

No link to skip the navigation was found.

Add a 'Skip to content' link as the first element, jumping to your <main> (WCAG 2.4.1). It can stay hidden until it receives focus.
  • i

    Colour contrast (WCAG 1.4.3)

Colour contrast can only be measured reliably in a browser with all styling applied, so Flowproof doesn't test it automatically.

Check text against its background with a contrast checker: at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text.

Why use an accessibility check

An accessible website can be used by everyone, including people who use a screen reader, rely on a keyboard alone or have low vision. Since 28 June 2025, the European Accessibility Act has applied to online shops and digital services, among others. The European standard behind it refers to WCAG level A and AA. What those guidelines ask for is explained in WCAG 2.2 explained and in the complete guide to website accessibility.

An automated check is the quickest way to see where you stand. It finds errors that turn up on page after page, such as images without alt text, form fields without a label or buttons without a name. These errors are common and usually quick to fix. There's an overview in the most common accessibility errors.

How the check works

Flowproof uses axe-core, Deque's open-source testing library, limited to the rules for WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 at level A and AA. The test runs on your page's HTML. For each rule you see the success criterion, the level, the impact and up to three examples of elements that fail, with a link to the explanation and fix on Deque's site. Rules that pass are shown too, so the report also tells you what's already in order.

Flowproof also checks three things axe doesn't cover: a link to an accessibility statement, a skip link and automatically playing sound. The accessibility score doesn't count towards the GEO score, but has its own score for each scan.

What the check can't do

Automated testing has its limits. Flowproof doesn't measure colour contrast, because that can only be done reliably on a fully rendered browser page. Whether the reading order is logical, an error message understandable and a form usable with a screen reader needs to be judged by a person. The difference between automated and manual testing is explained in testing website accessibility.

Who it's for

The accessibility check is included in Pro and Business. In Pro you can check up to 5 websites, with a weekly automatic scan and a PDF report. Agencies working for several clients can share the results in their own branding with Flowproof for agencies. The check runs in every scan, alongside the GEO audit. Frequently asked questions

Is my website accessible if the accessibility check finds no errors?

Not necessarily. An automated test finds some of the problems. Keyboard operation, a logical reading order, understandable text and how well the site works with a screen reader need to be judged by a person. Use the check as a first filter and have important pages tested manually as well.

Does Flowproof test colour contrast?

No. Colour contrast can only be measured reliably in a browser that loads all the styling, fonts and backgrounds. Flowproof says so plainly in the report and gives you the standards: at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text.

Does the check work for websites built with JavaScript?

Partly. Flowproof tests the HTML as the server sends it and doesn't run JavaScript. If there is little text in that HTML, the report says the test was limited and recommends also testing the page in a browser, for example with the axe extension or Lighthouse.

Does this check make me ready for the European Accessibility Act?

The check helps you find errors and include an accessibility statement, but it isn't a legal assessment. Whether the EAA applies to your business and what exactly you need to do is explained in our guide to the European Accessibility Act. If in doubt, consult a lawyer.

Is the accessibility check included in the free plan?

No, the accessibility check is included in Pro and Business. With a free account you can still scan the core GEO areas. You can upgrade to Pro or Business at any time from your dashboard.
